Don't Panic TV

There are a handful of channels available to you if you are a DStv subscriber and are willing to add a few settings to your Network Installation.

The most fun one is Don't Panic TV - a porn channel, which sometimes forgets to turn its encryption on.

Press Menu

Select 'Advanced Options'

Select 'Dish Installation'

Enter PIN: 9949

Select 'Network Configuration'

Select 'Network 2 Setup' (this is for Sentech's Vivid bouquet)

1. Signal Setup: Enabled
2. Orbital Position: PAS7/10
3. Use NIT: Yes
4. Frequency: 11170
5. Symbol Rate: 26652
6. Polarisation: Vertical
7: FEC: 5/6

Then select 'Accept these settings'

Select 'Network 3 Setup' (this is for Botswana TV)

1. Signal Setup: Enabled
2. Orbital Position: PAS7/10
3. Use NIT: No
4. Frequency: 11594
5. Symbol Rate: 27500
6. Polarisation: Vertical
7: FEC: 5/6

Select 'Accept these settings'

Select 'Network 4 Setup' (this is for Don't Panic TV)

1. Signal Setup: Enabled
2. Orbital Position: PAS7/10
3. Use NIT: No
4. Frequency: 12722
5. Symbol Rate: 26657
6. Polarisation: Vertical
7: FEC: 1/2

Select 'Accept these settings'

Now do a 'Scan new networks'

The BTV and Don't Panic TV channels will be at the very end of the channel list of the 'Public PAS7/10' list, probably from channel 29 onwards.

Please note that this information is for information purposes only. It works for me (on a 660 and a 720i). I do not know if it works for you, and I make no such warranties.

Don't Panic TV is sometimes unencrypted, sometimes not. You need to contact them, and purchase a different smart card for their services.

The first 2 network settings above still work, but neither will give you an unencrypted feed of e.tv - I suspect with equipment better than the standard DStv stuff you can get such a feed, since Lyngsat mention it on PAS7/10, but with a symbol rate of 5040 - too low for the Multichoice decoders.

Posted by: rory at September 5, 2003 04:11 PM

Can I access the public bouquet and still be able to tune into the dstv bouquet without changing the settings?.I have a dsd 977 but the moment I put the settings mentioned above then I lose access to the dstv bouquet. The dsd 977 has got only one network setting unlike the 720i which has got up to 4 settings.Any ideas?

Posted by: Mlibazisi at September 18, 2003 05:38 PM

No, you need to have multiple network settings in order to access both groups of channels simultaneously.

Posted by: rory at September 18, 2003 06:08 PM

Generally, the Multichoice/DStv-supplied decoders cannot handle a symbol rate below a certain amount (15000, I think).

Posted by: rory at October 22, 2003 03:33 PM

A further note to all asking for free-to-air channels:

At the moment the only free, unencrypted useable channels are:
- EuroNews
- God Channel
- Botswana TV
- Activate FET

The SABC channels and eTV carried by Sentech on the Vivid bouquet are encrypted, as are these same channels carried by Multichoice.

For my information, see Lyngsat (http://www.lyngsat.com/)

To enter the 4 digit symbol rate do the following: When u get to the symbol rate section before pressing OK, press 0 first before entering the symbol rate u want. Press Ok, and then enter the symbol rate. Press OK and it should work. This doesn't work with the Pace decoder.

U can also get Mana TV, a Portugese Christian channel for those of u who speak the language.
Frequency: 12577
S/R: 3378
Polarity: V
FEC: 3/4

Share the info dudes. Telemedia feeds work on Saturday/Sunday afternoons. U can only access one channel with a S/R below 15000 at a time. To access another disable first and rescan on multichoice decoders.

hi pple
l appreciate wat u guyz r doing 4 all of us.wat dstv is doing is not fair fisrt it started wit the removal of the analog, then we had 2 to pay 4 sabc & etv,now sabc & etv r gone.dstv is only concerned about money & not the customer's needs.we stick 2gether & give 'em a wake up call.anyone who knows any more frequencies pliz post em up 4 every1 2 see.

Posted by: ddn at December 12, 2003 02:27 PM

That is incorrect. DStv never 'removed the analog'. They've never broadcast on analog. That was Astrasat/SABC, as far as I know. The Nagravision-encrypted SABC and ETV signals on the public bouquet are there by Sentech, not DStv.

Posted by: rory at December 12, 2003 02:34 PM

It is possible to purchase the SABC and ETV channels from Vivid. "The difference, however, is that there is currently no monthly subscription required to view and listen to the channels available."

Posted by: rory at December 12, 2003 02:37 PM

rory - regarding the vivid package, there IS a monthly fee: you pay your SA TV license, but you can buy a vivid decoder for about R1500 from ellies etc. (technically you are supposed to present a tv license even when you buy a tv set in SA)

AFAIK the encyption is put in place specifically to stop viewers from outside south africa. (legal reasons regarding royalties for programs etc)

DSTV also offer (1,2,3 and etv) for 'free', if you pay a once off 'admin' fee of R500 (SA ONLY - as your TV license is the yearly sub). this would be for the DSTV DSD-xxx decoders which are IRDETO and not the VIVIDS which use NAGRA.

Posted by: robbie mack at December 14, 2003 11:13 PM

NEWS - read right on the top of the page how to set up your decoder. The radio FTA you want is on 12722V 25565 1/2. Botswana 11625 V 15000 3/4. Euronews 11674 26652 5/6. and also the parameters by DJKish. NIT should be off for all of them - I use a different decoder so I could be wrong. The rest of the parameters on this page are on different satellites, incorrect or not worth watching.

good luck

in the states guys buy special packs to make themselves descramblers, they just change a few ressistors and solder all the shit together. Was wondering if any freak has attempted this on our multichoice platform

Posted by: wozzy at December 17, 2003 01:07 PM

Hey ddn..to enter 4 digit symbol rate is tricky but can b done..yu enter ur fec, freq etc and then u enter zero for ur symbol rate wait a minute or so and then press ok...if invalid symbol rate pops up yu keep trying i.e enter 0 press ok..until it accepts..When it does accept 0 as symbol rate yu then enter ur 4 digit symbol rate ..wait a minute or so press ok..repeat until it accepts and then accept settings and scan ...try using 3rd network setup...With my decorder ,a 660, i found out i had to wait for a minute before pressing ok..i dont know if this has any significance..Persistance is the name of the game..

Posted by: robbiemack at December 23, 2003 06:29 PM

NEWS- symbol rate is roughly like the data rate being sent. FEC - forward error correction is the mix of error correction to data.

Posted by: robbiemack at December 24, 2003 12:02 PM

lesley - your signal strength probably needs to be a bit stronger. i used to have the same problem with mine.

the only other thing you can do is try use the signal quality menu in your decoder, and align your dish a little better.

Posted by: robbie mack at December 25, 2003 09:50 AM

malogo - it works with a 645 as well. the tuner needs a higher threshold to work on when compared to a domestic FTA. i've got two 98cmn dishes and although the difference is marginal etv only works on the one.

the lower symbol rates e.g bbc etv also have less power when compared to the full transponder used by euronews for example.

i got mine to work but i can't say for other dsd receivers.i bought a fta because the mc receivers don't lock onto certain fta signals on other satellites with good rf, so you might be right about the 977, but for lesley i'm assuming you're willing to try another hour before spending anything or giving up.

i'm not trying to waste your time.

and backstage is my favourite soap.

Posted by: robbiemack at December 26, 2003 08:03 PM

etv still works if you're wondering.

lesley maybe try with the frequency slightly off like 11638 instead of 11640 and 11458 instead of 11460.

regarding sabc, it's encrypted on intelsat 902 and also on pas 10. i don't see why they would broadcast fta as well, considering the encryption is to stop people from watching.

Posted by: robbiemack at December 28, 2003 10:20 AM

lesley - that's highly wishful thingking :-)
but don't count on it.

if you got etv you might need tweak your dish a litte. If you can take your decoder outside with a screen use a *short* piece of cable.

If this works, then you might just need shorten your cable a little or buy better quality coax. coax is lossy, so try shorten the distance between the decoder and dish - move the dish or cut unwanted cable. the tilt of the lnb also makes a difference. that's the angle the lnb faces the dish. there is a menu in your dstv decoder that has signal quality. if it has a course tuning/fine tuning, you can adjust your dish and lnb quite easily.

also a more sensitive receiver would also work with less problems.

all the best everyone in the new year.

Posted by: robbiemack at December 29, 2003 09:27 AM

try http://www.lyngsat.com/pas68.shtml for the pas10 as well.

lyngsat is for 24hour and public FTA stations not feeds and non-public stuff. thats why bbc and etv had a slight change in SR when they when they were posted there (on lyngsat).

Posted by: robbiemack at December 29, 2003 01:38 PM

Afrisat broadcasts between 2000hrs & 2100hrs news only .

Posted by: kuchi at December 29, 2003 08:39 PM

kuchi - intelsat is a satellite operator like panamsat. they deal more with governments for communications purposes, while panamsat do DTH (direct to home) like DSTV. (i could be mistaken, but this is my understanding)

the info is outdated, channel swazi has long since gone. The mux with SABC1/2/3/ETV had its encryption off for a while earlier this year, but its back on.

PAS 7 and PAS 10 are the two satellites you watch DSTV, VIVID with right now. PAS 7 for PANAMSAT 7. You receive the Ku band, hence a smaller dish and a frequency 10-12GHz. Think of it like VHF to UHF. your vhf aerial has a lower frequency/ bigger wavelength so it's bigger aerial than a uhf aerial.

Intelsat 902 / or I902 is in a slightly different position (64E) to these (68,5E). It's a C-BAND FREQ 3-4GHz, so you'd need a 2,4m dish at least, with a C-BAND LNB.

kuchi - by the way the site's in Russian.
use http://babelfish.altavista.com for a machine translation.

try http://www.satcodx3.com/0685/sae/ and http://www.juventus1897.it/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4235 there are a no of fta's listed.

TINARWO.the euronews signal that everyone was receiving was being transmited by sentech (the signal carrier for vivid).this channel was free to air, thats why we could receive it on other decoders like multichoice decoders.it's no longer available on sentench and can no longer be received by any decoder, since all decoders got the signal from sentech.

nation tv 12629H 2492 3/4

came up on lyngsat a few days ago. signal isn't very stong. haven't really looked yet. what is the programming like?

bow - good luck with the site, only that if someone copies what you have and send it to lyngsat/satcodx then the signals might get encrypted/or change. happened with etv and bbc.
so maybe put up a banner asking people to respect this as it's no good losing a channel by trying to be generous.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 3, 2004 03:33 PM

they show cartoon network in the morning and TCM at night. regular programming looks like old stuff.

signal is slightly weaker than Mana Sat, and the DSD stuff needs a much higher initial signal to work.
in the day

ETV = 83% same S/R for others e.g. BTV
AfriSat = 46%
Mana Sat = 25%
NATION = 20%

Posted by: robbiemack at January 4, 2004 09:08 AM

Telemedia has an uplink in Rivionia .BBCW is on this freq/sr except saturday mornings & special events when SR is 5470. BBCW then usually moves to 11645 4690. sometimes there are feeds using 11645 5470 as well.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 6, 2004 09:12 PM

Nation TV was on lyngsat first and I just copied it here. No credit to me.

I'm in SA and have a 98cm dish, and also get a weak signal. The Elsat decoder I'm using (because it's cheap) doesn't need as strong a signal as the UEC models, so that's why it works for me - I still get 35%-40% after major fine tuning.

I bought a splitter from Ellies yesterday, it's supposed to give some extra gain which might do the trick for the DSD, so I'll try it with my dish and DSD decoder and let you know if it makes a diffferece. The spitter is about R80 if it works.

Nation has more content than BTV, only its picture quality is not that good. BTV when it's not BBCW (11:00-22:00 I think) is like last years SABC. Nation seems like much older stuff, but more variety and Kenya content. Certainly not worth a new dish, but worth going for if you can get it free.

If you buy a 1.5m rather point to Telstar 12 and get MSNBC. MSNBC is from 11:00 to about 18:30. NBC Baghdad feeds then go from 19:00 until 2:30. After that 3:00 - 11:00 is NBC. http://www.nbc.com for the programming - the latest American Friends, Average Joe, Fear Factor etc. Decent channel if you're into reality shows like this. MSNBC is a high quality news channel. You can also watch VOA/CSPAN if you're interested in American politics.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 6, 2004 11:04 PM

chitawira- your receiver is one of the most sought after on the market. seems you've got the rare auto-sr models as well. don't sell it to anyone, as it's *VERY* valuable.

with DVB2000 it can automatically scan for all available signals - like the coship/satwork does but a little slower. if there is an FTA SABC (which I doubt) it will find it. It will also find data signals (e.g. 12550 V 5000 1/2), and signals that are not encrypted, but haven't got stream info. Assuming 11472 V 12000 and 11050 26652 are like these. Your decoder will try all VPID's on these to find the video data. you can interface with a scsi cable to a scsi card and record and watch on your pc.

most important, there is not a signal you cannot lock onto with those receivers. they can do a lot of other things which you'll find on the net.

check it out - be careful where you download the new firmware from. start off with these sites to see what DVB2000 is. official sites closed down a while back.
http://membres.lycos.fr/dvb2000 in French

the nokia got a good name because of this software. all the scanning pages feedsat, feedlandia, dxandy etc all use mediamasters like yours.

If you ever want to sell it give me an email, but I think you'll want to hang onto it after you realise its value :-)

Posted by: robbiemack at January 8, 2004 10:46 AM

john silweya - The radio FTA you want is on 12722V 25565 1/2.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 8, 2004 10:50 AM

kuchi - thanks
videosat - haven't read the article, but I knew a guy in PE who had a 10m dish and was watching. It's called sidelobe radiation. Astra has very powerful transmitters. There is no guarantee of reception, it might work on the other side of the country, but a 100km off it moght not work.

For an explanation http://www.apsattv.com/techinfo/predicting-out-of-footprint-coverage.htm

The main beam points to Europe, but some less powerful beams called sidelobes reflect to other parts of the world. This isn't wanted as it is a loss to the main reception area.

There was also an article in Telesatellite - I don't know offhand that said the dishes were picking up off the secondary dish on the satellite and didn't mention sidelobes.

I know a long time ago 90's there were people in Zim who were watching with big dishes 10m +.

Building a parabolic dish isn't that difficult, it's the cost of the metal that's the problem.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 10, 2004 01:20 PM

kuchi - the splitter i bought was supposed to give extra gain, but is really there to give outputs to two dfferent decoders from one dish.
i tried for nation with a 98cm dish and uec decoder which didn't work.

what you can try:
better cable, shorter cable, bigger dish, less sensitive receiver, better lnb.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 11, 2004 10:26 AM

Hie Robbie those Radio frequencies you posted do not seem to work. Are they correct coz I do not pick the signal on my 660 decoder otherwise we appreciate all the information you have been posting on this site.

Posted by: Truman at January 11, 2004 10:56 AM

truman - sorry i'm such a dumbass! 26657 is the right SR. sorry for the typo and wasting your time.

videosat - no as the 11460 is the center frequency and SR is the bandwidth used. It's just like a radio signal only at a much higher frequency e.g. 89.2MHz for 5fm (where I live) can't host another radio station on the same frquency if that makes sense.

If you had a spectrum analyser it would show the frequency & digital signals look like square shapes.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 11, 2004 01:35 PM

kuchi - I don't think that is right for PAS 10 or PAS 7 they don't use that frequency

PAS 10 DOWNLINK 11450 - 11700, 12250 - 12750 MHz
PAS 7 DOWNLINK 10950 - 11200, 11450 - 11750 MHz

Posted by: robbiemack at January 12, 2004 12:18 AM

john - sorry I was trying to say the downlink on PAS 10 is from 12250MHz to 12750MHz. the satellite doesn't have a transmitter for 12092MHz according to their website.

With a SR of 27500 it would use a whole transponder like dstv, so would have to be either 12522,12562,12602,12642,12682 or 12722.

12092H doesn't work

Posted by: robbiemack at January 12, 2004 09:47 AM

Robbiemack, I've just returned from lunch and it appears the FTA for the radio stations i.e. 12722V, 25565 SR and FEC=1/2 have not worked for me. Does the dish/LNB positioning matter? Other FTA can be received on 11110V, 26652 (even 26657) SR and FEC=5/6 such as Clicks, PEP Stores etc. Please help me!

Posted by: John Silweya at January 12, 2004 01:14 PM

12722V, 25565 SR and FEC=1/2
is wrong and should be
12722V SR 26652 and FEC 1/2

that was my mistake sorry

Posted by: robbiemack at January 12, 2004 01:56 PM

I've also tried 12722V SR 26652 and FEC 1/2, but they also do not seem to work for me.

However, I've seen some decoders on which this does work! Is there anything else that I am supposed to do.

My understanding is that multichoice decoders purchased from RSA have these and can tune to these stations, but those purchased directly from Multichoice, say here in Zambia, have something done to them to block these channels. Is there some special code that can be keyed in or something?

Posted by: John Silweya at January 12, 2004 02:32 PM

john - to be honest i really don't know with the UEC decoders, but i don't think so. if you're getting 11170 then you should get 12722 as well. (they are from the same provider). if you put 11170 with nit, then it will automatically dl all the other sentech public details like 11674 and 12722 as well.

Just some possible ideas if this is not the case:
Ku band lnbs work in two ranges low and hgh. low being 10950 to 11700 and high from 11700 to 12750. Check your lnb can work with both - there could be writing on it with Local Oscillating frequencies e.g. 9750 and 10700. Some lnbs are called universal and do low and high while single band lnbs will just do low or just high. if your lnb isn't universal ( only has 9750 or says single ) then that's the problem - check with the guy you bought it from to make sure otherwise you'll have to buy another lnb.

I think your settings should be right, or your decoder would have said invalid frequency already. just to check:
in your setup there will be a setting in the lnb setup menu for dual or single - it will have to be dual to work -if you have a dual lnb, then this is the setting stopping you . so lnb low = 9750, lnb high = 10700. switching = 11700. leave the diseq stuff. the oscillating freq must match the lnb - american lnbs work at 10600 - it is unlikely that you have one of these though.

this is a fairly strong signal, so i don't think that's the problem, but just for interest's sake 12722 is on a completely different satellite to 11170.

sorry but thats all I can think of.

best of luck

Posted by: robbiemack at January 12, 2004 04:59 PM

kuchi what I know is just the basics really, nothing more. all of it is on the net.

you would only change lnb settings if you changed lnbs e.g. changing to a c-band lnb.

you can pick up most stuff with a mc decoder e.g. dwtv on i707, cnn on nss7, but not tv5 afrique, also worked with teleafrica rtg on ab3 and a few others like thai3 stuff.

if you are adjusting your dish use this link: http://home.online.no/~jensts/Satellite/lookangles.htm.
fill in your site location (e.g. harare), then go to satellite name (pas7)
you are probably going to have to raise the height of the dish a bit (compare the elevation with pas4 and pas7 on that page). the elevation is for a parabolic dish - you have an offset dish so on the back of the dish where the bolts that would keep the height in place there should be markings that would correspond to this elevation e.g. 30deg. otherwise its easy enough to guess. (raise by one or so degrees)

azimuth is the bearing you point to, but if your height is right it will be easier just to turn the dish about the right amount until you get a signal.

then you can turn the lnb clockwise/ anticlockwise until you get the best quality. this is the "tilt". tilt means rotate clockwise or anticlockise not forward or back.

your dish should receive higher frequencies with the right lnb. 13000MHz and those are the uplink or the ground transmitting to the satellite frequency. I don't know you can receive with this though.

Guess what happened? I tried last night to change the LNB Lo and High Freq settings. I changed the High Freq setting from 10700 to 11700. Then, I got ETV!! However, I am still not able to find those SA radio stations. Is there still something I can do on the LNB Lo and High Freq settings? I tried to change it to 12700, 12750 or 12800 but it said "invalid signal setup" on 12750MHz.

What is surprising is why I was not able to get etv earlier, because I could get BTV which is at a freq of 11625 or 11627MHz and etv is 11460MHz? Coz I tried earlier to install etv with LNB Lo and High Freq settings of 9750 and 10700MHz reapectively and it did not work.

Any suggestions on the way forward are welcome. And by the way, I am an Electrical Engineer - specialized in Power Systems but also with a bias towards electronics - so I am researching and working on something. So, watch this space for some real good news soon!

Guys, i heared that SABC Africa is free to air, and they are some guys who watch it here in Botswana, does anyone of you know the frequencies?

Posted by: Dan "Dawg" Kgosi at January 14, 2004 07:12 AM

john - glad ETV works at least, but I have no idea why it works because of those changes.

high freq should be 10700, it's the lnb that must support this.

Your receiver gets a signal through the cable 950-2150MHz called the IF (intermediate frequency).

What the lo does is convert 12722 or 11460 down to a frequncy in this range.

(12722-10700) = 2022MHz.
(11460-9750) = 1710Mhz.

however, if the wrong lo were used:
11460-10700 = 760MHz
12722-9750 = 2972MHz
which are out of range (950-2150MHz) for your receiver. This is where the switching frequency comes in.
The switching frequency of 11700 means at 11700Mhz and above it uses 10700 as the ocsillating freq, and 9750 below 11700.

With C-band its 5150 as the LO, but works slightly differently
e.g. BBCW India = 5150-3974 = 1176.

Guys. I have tried this freqs for sabc1 12729H, sabc2 12693H, sabc3 12660H, with other SR but no signal
can somebody try to get the right SR and FEC.

Posted by: chikomberero at January 14, 2004 04:13 PM

Robbiemack - I think my decoder can not receive channels at a frequency of 12000MHz or more. Because, Nation TV which is on 12630H, 2492, 3/4 or 1/2 can not be downloaded. I'll check my LNB to confirm.

What happens during scanning is that it is quickly downloading all other networks quickly i.e. 11674V, 26652, 5/6 , but when it reaches 12722V, 26652, 1/2, it stalls a bit, then moves on without downloading any channels.

Are there any suggestions on LNB frequencies I can put in to overcome this?

Silweya J

Posted by: John Silweya at January 15, 2004 09:05 AM

john - you say that many people don't get this in zambia, so it's possible the importers brought in lnbs that only do one band.

it could also be the signal where you live is too weak for the decoder. if you're in zambia your signal strength same as what i get - i'm using a 98cm dish. this isn't likely your problem.

if your lnb is universal, it's unlikely that it's not standard, so make the lnb high freq 10700. it's either 10600 or 10700 - nothing else.

also i could be wrong about the mc decoders as mine used to give a lot of problems with the radios & 11674 -freezing,green screen etc.

nation tv isn't very strong, so first try get 12722.

Posted by: robbiemack at January 15, 2004 10:06 AM

Robbiemack - actually, ALOT of people do get 12722 here in Zambia, and it is a very strong signal on a 98cm dish. I have the big dish and a KU Band LNB - so the problem is why I can't get 12722 whereas most of my friends can.

Any one out there knows what has happened to Afrisat?? There has been no signals now for two days. The channel is on freq. 12666 and SR 4195. Help out some one.

Posted by: AmisJ at January 16, 2004 05:57 AM

Hi video sat. I am using a 720i multichoice decoder,98cm dish the SR is 12521,12722
FEC 3/4,5/6 and the cable is 10m. Maybe you can try them out guys

Posted by: chikomberero at January 16, 2004 07:00 AM

smoz - really i'm no expert, but from the the rough footprint (AFRICA - EUROPE HORIZONTAL BEAM)
http://www.panamsat.com/global_network/pas10_ku.asp - you are near Ndola? so your EIRP is somewhere 43-45dbW, I'm on the coast i'm supposed to get 45dbw, and my picture just makes it but starts going when it rains. if i used a 1.2m dish, i wouldn't have this problem.

if your oscillating freq is 10600 for high, then that's probably John's problem as the mc decoders are 10700 by default.

I have two idle decoders Delta 9000 and Delta 9000 PLUS .Does anyone know whether these can be any used in catching FTA channels?Unfortunately I do not have cables for them at the moment.I tried the internet for info on these decoders but I could not find anything - could they be analogue, perhaps?

Posted by: Mlibazisi at January 16, 2004 01:56 PM

Mlibazisi - that's an old MNET analogue decoder, not a satellite receiver. you can only pick up tv with them.

Hi People. A very stupid Question. If I catch a bird in c-band, broadcasting a channel in analog, should my digital system be able to view it ? My digital satellite decoder is asking then for a SYMBOL RATE which I don't have, what am I suppose to enter in that field. Analog channels don't have SR's.
Warm regards

Posted by: hein at February 1, 2004 06:47 PM

hein - no you need an analog receiver. the digital receiver gets digital data which is a mpeg2 stream as opposed to an analog receiver would work with normal pal. your digital receiver won't work with any sr.

i presume this is for arabsat.

Posted by: robbiemack at February 1, 2004 09:05 PM

paulm - think of satellites as torches (as in flashlights) floating above the equator. they have areas where they illuminate e.g. west europe, southern africa etc and the rest of the area is still in the dark. this is called the footprint. areas in the center of the footprint have the stongest eirp (or the most power) and those on the fringe have the least reception power. an eirp of 40dBw means you'll need a 2.1m dish, 50dBw means a 60-90cm dish is needed. outside the footprint, you'll probably need a setup like the seti project.

hotbird is not just a single satellite, but a cluster of satellites sharing the same orbital postition. all their footprints are in europe, so from sa they can't be seen.

lyngsat has included links under the "beam" on their pages.. e.g. hotbird's super wide beam is at

the only ku band satellites really are hellas sat2,nss6,nss7,pas10&7,europestar,intelsat 704 telstar 12, eutelsat w1,w2,w4

Posted by: robbiemack at February 1, 2004 09:23 PM

Check the following sites for Free Adult channels on Astra's bird. It has a fairly good footprint.

You will need a card which you can get from:

Posted by: paul at February 2, 2004 11:12 AM

ASTRA only points to Europe.

XTV on ASTRA 2C -> http://www.ses-astra.com/satellites/footprints.php?sat=14

there's a bundle of free German stuff up there. You'll be shocked at Deukom's monthly price for their 5 channels. They're available free on ASTRA.

What stops you is that you'll need a dish like this to receive them http://www.dxandy.de/afrika.htm - above that this is still not guaranteed good reception (or any at all in fact)

Has anyone managed to get the new e-tv symbol rate? longjohn, rodckers please help!

Posted by: sanchez nunez at February 2, 2004 01:46 PM

There are 2 adult channels available on Telstar 12 in Southern Africa using a normal Ku Band Dish. These channels are "The Adult Channel" and "Super 1".
These channels are scrambled using Cryptoworks so one would have to buy a receiver that can decode Cryptoworks and a card. The cards, I think can only be obtained in Uk. I am not sure about the subcription procedure of these channels but I think that these links will be helpful www.theadultchannel.com www.super1.tv www.upc.com www.tvsubscriptions.com.
If anyone gets more info on how to subscribe to these channels can you please post it on this forum.
By the way the freq of Super 1 is 11150H 18386 3/4 and the one of The Adult Channel is 11124H 18386 3/4. If you check the tv guide on The Adult Channel website you will notice that there are times when the channels broadcasts Free To Air (Free View)

Guys, using elementary mathematics, we all know that the last S/R of ETV was 5040, then they changed it to 4630.

What does that tell you about the new S/R. The engineers should be able to solve this without a flinch. Think guys think.

Posted by: ETV Rep. at February 9, 2004 07:30 AM

The formula for calculating symbol rate is bitrate/2*fec*188/204. it follows that the bit rate for etv should be found. Mathematically the bitrate for etv at 5040 was 6967.5 and the bit rate at 4630 was 6400.3. The simplest method is to use the bitrate culculator but we need the allocated satellite bandwidth and the occupied satellite band width. if anyone can provide these for etv then we can calculate the symbol rate.

Posted by: jmapfidza at February 9, 2004 01:22 PM

Hmmm guys.

No Etv!! Andrew, what u are suggesting might work - a smart card from RSA might have SABC activated on it - it is worth trying!!

Posted by: Dr.x at February 10, 2004 01:35 PM

Okay here is my thought about the new ETV SR, the guys at ETV have to use a function to generate new SRs if they are to do it without a lot of headaches.

Now we have to assume the function is linear, that is y = x + k, were k is a constant. If we use the last two SRs, it means that k = 410.

Which means that if we assume that ETV has to maintain its SR within the ranges 3800 8800, for some reason (this is were engineers come in) then the possible SRs are:

I think if we can always keep the SR as they change we would finally have that function.

Posted by: ETV Rep at February 10, 2004 02:33 PM

By the way the function for calculating the Symbol Rate as given by "jmapfidza" is:

SR = (Bit Rate / 2) * ((188 * FEC) / 204)

that means;

Bit Rate = SR * (1128/816), when FEC = 3/4.

Hi guys
Can I use my DSTV lnb to receive analog signals for my analog decoder, is there was any analog available. Apparently, Hellas sat2 (39East) has a channel or 2 over SA with 52dbw strength-analog channel/s. I have a old elsat analog decoder.

Posted by: Satcatch at February 10, 2004 03:47 PM

Hellas Sat2 does not have any analog beams & the one covering Southern Africa is not fixed.
You will need a steerable dish setup & the downlink starts at 12.5Ghz-12.75Ghz.

Posted by: Jacques at February 10, 2004 10:26 PM

ETV's symbol rate can range even as low as 1500 or even lower. Most of the commercial decoders start at 2000 and can not recieve lower symbol rates than 2000.

Signal quality lid up to 62%. Signal strength lid up to 86%. To get the pic, = dish size. AND depends on the Signal quality, not the signal strengh.

Posted by: fallow at February 11, 2004 12:10 PM

For the ones that does not have a autoscanner DSD finding SR, there is a more simpler way finding SRs. You need a analog decoder and radio. Using them togeter will get U the SR your need.

Longjohns back to cause shit with Dr Evil cause he's got more fta and encrpted channels, all to his own, and doesnt give a fuck that he benefits from this site. Lets see if any other bright fuck can just modifying a few resistors in a multichoice 990, because even if you do, you'll have no chance of fucking resetinng the 4 black buttons inside. press the buttons in the correct order and free movie magic and mnet to night. figure out this and you might be lucky... remove the front cover of the decoder, pretty hey. Now dont stop there you little fucker , see the empty space for resistors put 2 r1237 resistors in parralel now switch on and go to scan new network and while scanning for dstv, there is a shit load of time for a shithead like dr evil's twin with a phd in fucking street lights, to press those little buttons . first button press once .hey doctor evil you get your mum to suck your knob while you do this. second button three times and the next buttons are accumulative by that just add another press . do all the buttons in clockwise motion the first button is the clossest to the fucking remote receiver. all this shit you have now read should fuck up idereto or what ever the fucking swiss encryption maker is.

so dr evil you see i'm not that bad and multichoce will thank you

the multichoice agent (longjohns)

if you not intrested in doing what i have said i'm sorry, hey but i dont undestand why every one is fighting over etv. i see a simple solution as most people on this site have multichoice decoders. simply spend a bit of money and buy new smartcards and register them with a south african address, as well as this register your machine in sa . the rest of dstv dont really care if you do this after all we don't take money for petty channels, the added bonous is you gain portuges, italian, etc channels

i see some fucking people say i'm wasting their time and space. Hey EtvRep, nice to meet you, together on this site we can cause mass confussion. lets post bogus freq using fake names to "waste time and space" and generally anoye That evil fucking twin

Dr Evil's little fucking twin you've causd this, so appologise b4 something happens to this site !!!!!!!

Hey any one thinking i'm a fake, how would you like pictures of my device, its just a simple card reader which displaces a magnetic field to descramble dstv. this works most of the time but i do have an alternative Most good quality computers now come with card readers and you can hack multichoices software every time they update your machines, meaning you always one step ahead of them because they need time to sort out the problems with there new v2 cards, and by the way if you move to australia you can buy these gold cards ready to use for less than $75 which is the cost of one month ds and they will last till we have v3 card

Ps Etv rep i didnt really mean to follow through with bogus freq

Hello all,
Daystar TV appears as SE2 when you scan the frequency. You can easly rename it afterwards. It is a religious channel. Also Loveworld appears as Vivid. And the answer for Blaze in Zimbabwe. There is no such thing as frequencies for dsd910. The same frequencies will work for all types of dsd.

Posted by: The Dude at March 2, 2004 08:51 AM

Hi Tinarwo - i know of a forster fta5000v2.i. this dsd is comes with several satellites and uses both ku/c-bands. if you change your dish and lnb you can watch as many free channels as you like.

Posted by: joe at March 4, 2004 06:52 AM

Tinarwo: an FTA receiver is quite good. You just need to check out the specifications for the model of the Fortec Star DSD you intend to purchase. I do have an FTA receiver as well. With the normal Ku band LNBFs we get here in Zim, I am currently able to view about 12 channels free including ETv, Nation TV, and BTv. If I purchase a C/Ku band single solution LNBF and still use the PAS7/10 satellite I should be able to watch over 30 channels from Zim according to www.satcodx.com.

Before purchasing, just ensure the DSD can receive FTAs in C and Ku band. These links might also help:

Posted by: abel at March 20, 2004 07:24 PM

people are gettin hold of this site from search engines like msn and yahoo where you simply type dstv and this site is listed as top

Posted by: chimdi at March 20, 2004 08:19 PM

trevor- i did not know that by contributing to this page i get insulted - anyway i forgive you!! to only those interested all sabc, etv, mnet etc uses software called Nagravision, Irdeto 1+2 etc. these software can be uncoded using acce-vize software to de-scramble - how is what i am working on. the PentaCrpt Ver software can only de-scramble sabc 2 and not the others - so any ideas are most welcome.

Posted by: joe at March 21, 2004 08:46 AM

SABC use Nag*avision encryption on provider ID "2C01".The 2 mentioned keys "DE 00 22 48 75 79 AE C7" & "3E 65 7C 4E 84 DD 24 11" have been unchanged for more than a year.It is of no use if you don't have a card programmer , Dreambox or Nag*avision decoder. In short, the keys do decrypt all SABC channels and is valid if you have the hardware but it is not worth the trouble.

tatenda s,

Use the following:

It should work.

Posted by: Jermain at March 31, 2004 07:42 AM

tatenda - to insert nation frequency on any other decoder reduce the number by 100 (12629 = 12529) even 12722 if it does not work just do as above - it will work. i have done that on fortec star fta 5000v2.

Posted by: joe at March 31, 2004 09:07 AM

Don't mess around with set-top decoders unless you have lots of time to waste punching in billions of combinations of freqs/SRs etc. Rather get a DVB card for your PC with ProgDVB. Blind scan included. Scan all the transponders on the sat and stores all channels, radio and video. Records, etc. Available for about R800. Also comes with 'software smartcard' - so if you have the keys....

I accidentally hit 'reset to factory settings" on my UEC DSD910 box. It now cannot find any signal by sitting on the 'scanning' setting. If I cancel the scan it only allows me to look @ the menu for app 3 seconds before it goes into the scanning loop again. Does anyone know how to stop this so that I can go back into the menu and set all the frequencies I had before?

MSNBC Telstar 12 Frequency 11518 SR 3744 FEC 7/8 H.Extreme sports 11123 SR 18386 FEC 3/4 H.
MSNBC is not fully free to air anymore they encrypt the broadcasts during the early morning hours.Unfortunately for Extreme Sports you will
need A Viaccess compatible decoder and a emulator or origanal card to watch it.

Posted by: neo at May 6, 2004 08:20 AM

ProgDVB is a windows software application used with a PC Satellite Reciever card.I use a Skystar2 card to recieve SAT TV on my PC.
Such a card will set you back no more than R600 P&P incl. direct from Germany. It is a cheap reliable solution for any satellite TV enthusiast. With the right software + plugins you can even decrypt some PAYTV channels and watch it for free.Keep in mind that some encryption systems - not cracked yet.

Abel - you can get a twin LNBF together with a dielectric plate for R250 and you can get all SABC channels, E-TV, M-Net RSA, Mozambique etc on Intelsat 902 at 62.0°E. The dielectric plate is attached to your LNBF in order to scan right, left, veti & horiz pols. If you have problems, plse feel free to e-mail.
